It’s been a minute since we checked in on the Michigan cannabis landscape and, what do you know, Michigan has cleared $42 million in MMJ sales in four months. Yes, according to a new report from the Detroit Free Press, Michigan’s medical marijuana sales have been unexpectedly robust in its opening quarter of sales. Based off the reported sales figures, the state’s coffers netted an approximate $3.5 million in combined sales and excise taxes.
Michigan’s Cannabis Sales Came With A Mere 54 Dispensaries Open
Most surprising about the report aside from that $42 million total? Michigan made those sales with only 54 dispensaries open thus far. That breaks down to each dispensary raking in an average of about $195,000/month. Not bad for four months of work. While those figures are pretty loose, with some retailers surely netting closer to a lion’s share, it would appear that Michigan medical marijuana has so far been a success.
Another noteworthy item: the majority of Michigan is still without any dispensaries whatsoever. Sales this high with so few stores suggest that bigger things are yet to come!
Michigan’s Success Proves Demand For Medical Marijuana In Midwest
Look, we’ve been harping on this for a minute, but the Midwest is a ripe opportunity for medical (and rec-use) cannabis. Michigan’s sales report falls right in line with early numbers we’ve seen from neighboring Ohio, to say nothing of Oklahoma MMJ sales which have been astronomical. The Midwest is a huge market and we believe in the great things happening there right now. (It’s why we’re going to Saint Louis next week!)
With medical marijuana sales in Michigan going swimmingly, the real test it seems will come when recreational sales go live in January of 2020. The state’s excise tax has been eliminated and now, with recreational use legal, but no legal sales yet, we will wait until the still favorable 10% sales tax on rec-use goes in effect next January and see what happens.
