BCC calls for emergency regulations, licensed operators to display QR code

The Bureau of Cannabis Control has released emergency regulations calling for licensed retailers and transporters to display a QR code certificate in storefront windows and to be carried while in transport. The regulations are a two-fold response to the vaping crisis from last fall. Namely, the hope is to more immediately help the public and law enforcement differentiate between licensed and unlicensed retailers.

“The proposed regulations will help consumers avoid purchasing cannabis goods from unlicensed businesses by providing a simple way to confirm licensure immediately before entering the premises or receiving a delivery,” said Bureau Chief Lori Ajax. “These requirements will also assist law enforcement in distinguishing between legal and illegal transportation of
cannabis goods.”

Illnesses from last year’s vaping crisis were caused, in the vast majority of cases, to be from bootlegged vaping cartridges sold on the unlicensed market. So a QR code that consumers could scan and receive immediate info on licensure could be pretty effective. Of course, implementation is another thing.

The rollout is expected to begin within two weeks and it is expected that operators will be able to download their unique QR code via their portal page.
